Geek stuff

You're a geek: you can write your name in binary!

Installed more RAM on your older computer but it's not going faster?
Unfortunately, the ability of Windows to use RAM does not always coincide with ability of a motherboard's chipset to cache RAM, so be sure to check your motherboard's manual before you upgrade. The motherboard's chipset determines how much RAM can be cached. If the motherboard has an elderly chipset, the amount of RAM it can cache might be limited to as little as 64MB.
If a motherboard can only cache 64MB of RAM, such as one with the elderly Intel TX chipset, and you install 128MB, even if it works, it will slow the system down significantly, because the excess RAM cannot be cached, and so will be accessed in the same relatively slow manner as the virtual memory swap file that Windows sets up on the hard disk drive is accessed.

RAIDIT!
Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID)
While RAID-0 is known as data striping, RAID-1 is known as data mirroring. In RAID-1, data being written on one hard disk is simultaneously copied to another hard disk. RAID levels range from 0 through 5. There is one another level of RAID known as RAID 10, which is a combination of RAID 1 and RAID 0, and it is the best in terms of performance and redundancy.

IRQ clash
When there is an IRQ conflict, you should try reassigning IRQs in the BIOS manually or try the card in a different PCI slot. By providing a device with a free IRQ, the problem will be solved. To know about IRQ assignments on your machine, try Start » Accessories » System tools » System Information; click on Hardware Resources.

Charles Babbage
Uber geek

Charles Babbage (1792 - 1871). In 1834, he designed the Analytical Engine, the precursor of the computer. He was unable to obtain funding for it from the government, who thought it would be worthless.
The first computer was launched in 1943, more than 100 years after the Babbage design. In 1998, the Science Museum in London, UK, built a working replica of the Babbage machine, using the materials and work methods available at Babbage's time. It worked just as Babbage had intended.

Anudder geek:

Kees (Kornelis) Antonie Schouhamer Immink invented an efficient technique to improve playing time and disc playability. His techniques have found widespread application in CD, DVD, and Blu-Ray Disc systems. His research resulted in around 1000 patents.

Ultimate geek:

Heron of Greece invented steam power in 50 BC. But the leaders of the day thought that it would cause unemployment which may lead to unrest and the invention ran out of steam. The steam engine reappeared again only in 1698.

Nottageek!

In 1899 the director of the US patent Office assured President McKinley that "everything that can be invented has already been invented." Nou ja, toe nou!
