Optical drivesCD and DVD discs use cyanine & phthalocyanine dyesare photosensitive organic compounds for the coating dye. It is a compound similar to that used in making photographs. When a CD-R is recorded the dye is heated by the writing laser and becomes opaque (or absorbtive) through a chemical reaction to the heat. A 16x DVD-RW writes data at 21.13 MB/s, roughly 9 times that of a CD-ROM. DVD physical spin rate is about 3 times faster than CD.
